Executive Summary - 2003/04
The project involved student participants in 20 schools. These results are based on the 1184 (983 treatment, 201 control) students that had matched pretest/posttest scores. In this report the treatment students are considered in two groups depending on whether they attended public or Catholic schools. A 37-item questionnaire including three demographic items was administered before and after the treatment to both groups. Pretest/posttest gain scores for each item were compared by group and tested for significant (p< .05) differences using analysis of variance. These comparisons were followed up with an analysis by gender, to determine if the treatment was especially effective for young men or young women. Because three groups were compared, there are three pairs of comparisons: TCG – Public vs. Control, TCG – Catholic vs. Control and, TCG – Public vs. TCG – Catholic.
TCG – Public vs. Control
The Choice Game students in public schools showed more gains than control students in their level of agreement with these statements:
- Would you like to see teens practicing abstinence more often in the media? (p=.023/30% increase)
- I plan to be sexually abstinent (not have sex) until marriage. (p<.001/14.6% increase)
- It is not a good idea for teenagers to have sex. (p<.001/9.6% increase)
- My friends think that having sex before marriage for people my age is not a good idea. (p=.009/11.8% increase)
- I plan to avoid drugs and alcohol use because they increase my chances of pregnancy. (p=.007/7.2% increase)
TCG – Catholic vs. Control
The Choice Game students in Catholic schools showed more gains than control students in their level of agreement with these statements:
- I plan to be sexually abstinent (not have sex) until marriage. (p<.001/6.9% increase)
- I plan to avoid drugs and alcohol use because they increase my chances of pregnancy. (p=.007/7.6% increase)
The Choice Game students in Catholic schools showed more knowledge gains than control students on these items:
- There are many other ways of catching STDs other than sexual intercourse. (p=.026/25% increase)
- It is not possible to catch an STD from Oral Sex. (p<.001/46.3% increase)
TCG – Public vs. TCG – Catholic
The Choice Game students in public schools showed more gains than The Choice Game students in Catholic schools in their level of agreement with these statements:
- I make decisions without thinking about the consequences. (reverse scored) (p=.041)
- I can go to my family when I have concerns or questions about sex. (p=.029)
- I plan to be sexually abstinent (not have sex) until marriage. (p<.001)
- It is not a good idea for teenagers to have sex. (p<.001)
- Having sexual intercourse can cause a lot of emotional stress for people my age. (p=.018)
The Choice Game students in Catholic schools showed more knowledge gains than The Choice Game students in public schools on these items:
- STDs that are caused by a virus can be completely cured. (p=.015)
- It is not possible to catch an STD from Oral Sex. (p<.001)
